INEC Declares Obaseki Edo Governor-Elect

The candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has been declared winner of the Edo State governorship election held, Wednesday.
The declaration was made Thursday, in Benin City, the state capital, by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Obaseki won 319,483 votes, beating his closest rival, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with a wide margin. Ize-Iyamu scored 253,173 votes.
The collation process was not without controversy, with some of the parties calling for either a recount of the votes in some areas or outright cancellation of the ballot due to irregularities.
PDP, in particular, is alleging that its victory in several areas had been overturned between midnight and this morning mainly through the voiding of valid votes and inflation of the votes of the ruling party.
Chieftains and representatives of KOWA Party and Action Alliance, while reacting to figures announced at the collation centre in Benin City, the state capital, also called for the cancellation of the election, alleging that it was marred by inducement and over-voting, among other malpractices.
However, hundreds of PDP supporters held a protest at the INEC office in Benin where the exercise was taking place.
The protesters alleged that results from their areas were manipulated and that there results were cancelled in areas that were PDP strongholds. They called on INEC to suspend collation of result from the areas, including Esan North-East LGA.
The protesters were, however, dispersed by the police with tear gas as the protest became more heated.
Some agents, including that of KOWA Party, called for the cancellation of the result, with others, including the APC candidate urging them to go to court.
Also, PDP’s agent, Chris Agbonwanegbe, refused to sign the result sheet, saying it was “rehearsed and produced”.
