Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Rivers State Police Command have shot dead, a notorious Dey-Gbam cult leader in Akwukabi community in Etche Local Government Area of the state, simply known as Fela.
The notorious gang leader is alleged to have been responsible for the various violent crises in the community and its environs in recent time.
A source from Umuota village in Akwukabi, the hometown of the cult leader, said that his lifeless body was discovered last Friday, in one of the destroyed buildings within the community, amidst jubilations and a sigh of relief.
The source, who pleaded anonymity, said that the cult leader died due to bullet wounds he sustained from the gun duel last Wednesday between two operatives of SARS, who were on routine patrol of the troubled and deserted Umuota village.
According to the source, the late Fela, had engaged operatives of SARS in a gun battle but was over-powered by the gallant police officers, which forced the cult leader to abandon his riffle, and ran into the bush for safety.
It was learnt that late Fela’s decomposing body was later found in one of his Uncle’s deserted buildings, three days after he escaped with injuries from bullet wounds from operatives of SARS in his Umuota village in Akwukabi, last Wednesday.
It was further gathered that the late Dey-Gbam gang leader was been buried over the weekend, amidst jubilation across the nine villages of the community.
Our source said that hundreds of men, women, and youth were seen in their clusters, singing the praises of the police, and dancing their hearts out, during the burial ceremony of the one hitherto described as a man with Lucifer’s heart.
The late Fela and his gang were allegedly responsible for the recent cult clashes that claimed two lives and destroyed several properties worth millions of Naira in the community.
When contacted on telephone, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, while confirming the killing, explained that the crack team stationed in the community in the wake of the rising crisis, acted within its mandate of restoring total peace, law and order in the area.
